Resumes are scanned into these databases. This can lead to some problems as old scanners can sometimes dramatically change the look of your resume. It is beneficial to build both a scannable resume and a printed resume which you can bring to your interviews To overcome this you can create a scannable resume. A scannable resume is a traditional resume stored preferably as a plain text file and with little formatting. How Long Should a Resume Be? Another important decision you have to make about your resume format is the length of your resume. There are no specific rules on how long your resume should be. Resume length can vary depending on your situation. The length of your resume will depend on how much space you need to compactly and precisely list your relevant skills and accomplishments.
Finally never let your resume be determined by resume formats. It is also very important to avoid omitting or including information just because the format requires this information. Doing this can cause you to miss out on a good opportunity because there is missing information or extraneous information. When you are compiling your resume and considering resume formats it is important that you keep your resume as neat and as simple to read as possible. Some people think that it is more important to make your resume stand out so they choose to use graphics to generate some interest. Quite often this can actually backfire and the resume that looks less professional may be the first to hit the trashcan. It is in your best interest to keep resume formats clean and professional. You want to invite the employer to read the resume so keep your resume formats reader friendly. Use wide margins because thin margins and long long sentences can cause the reader to loose their train of thought and they can loose interest. Certainly you need to be professional but do not cause the reader to need a dictionary to follow what you are saying and do not use professional jargon.
The functional resume format is an effective way to reduce the number of pages that an employer will have to read and will make your application more impactful. The disadvantage to this resume format is that recruiters dont like it. They get suspicious about your job history if no dates are included and may toss it in the garbage if it raises too many questions. Although at one time I used a functional resume because in my chronological resume I had gaps in my work history that I suspected were keeping the phone from ringing with interview requests. I changed the format from chronological to functional and the phone started to ring! So for the best of both worlds you might want to try the combination resume if youve got gaps in your work history or have been out of the workforce for a while.
