When you search for job openings online some companies will have on their websites which online resume format is acceptable. If you dont know which format is acceptable to a certain company call them and ask. The worst thing you can do is send an online resume in the wrong format and have it ignored. PLAIN TEXT RESUME This format is also referred to as ASCII. Many companies used to accept this type of resume a few years ago when searching for a job on the internet was still new. When this format is used the resume is written in plain text with no formatting. The resume is sent in an email to the employer. Unfortunately because the resume is unformatted it looks pretty ugly and is hard to read. With the advancements in word processing and email functions companies are turning towards more professional looking online resume formats.
Before you can know which of the top resume formats will work best for you it is important that you understand the purpose of each of the formats. There are three primary resume formats. Chronological Resume This format places a great emphasis on your work history and education. This is the format most people think of when they hear the term resume. For decades this was THE resume format. However times have changed and now other formats have become acceptable for resumes. You should consider using the chronological format when you have a strong work history and academic achievements. Not all of us have that strong work history displaying a clear career path. For many reasons including the unavailability of the right job many of us have taken a job outside of what would be considered a normal career path.

You organize it in reverse order by employer with your most recent job listed first. When it works best. This kind of resume format highlights your career progression and growth. Employers like it because its usually easy to read and can be scanned quickly for your employment history. Here are the situations where it works best: When youve worked steadily and consistently with no major gaps in employment. When your job history shows that youve moved up in responsibility steadily. When youve held standard well-recognized jobs for well-known companies. When your most significant achievements have occurred recently.
