Deciding on a resume format is the first major decision to be made when creating your resume. The overall look of your resume depends on the resume format font and outline you choose. The two main types of format in use are the chronological and functional formats. When to Use the Chronological Resume Format A Chronological resume is the easiest to create and it is also the most widely used format. Chronological resume format allows you to list your job experiences starting with the most recent and moving back in time. This allows employers to see your progression in the career field. If you are staying in your career field this format will allow employers to see if you are qualified for the job you are applying for. It may not be beneficial for people changing career fields.
The internet is teeming with programs and templates promising to offer the best resume format applicable to todays job market. It is just a matter of doing your careful and thorough research. While these easily accessible resume formats are a good guide in making your own there are a few items you need to keep in mind to ensure that your resume is worth reading. Guidelines for a Good Resume Format Avoid writing a resume that feels and looks like a novel. Your resume format must be arranged so that you will have at most two pages. Come on. Employers are busy people. You wont really expect them to spend their whole time reading your resume. Even if you have a lot of other stuff you want to include focus on putting only the experiences and skills that will apply to the position you are seeking.
Instead identify how you have been of value to your employers. Speak in terms of saving money increasing profits improving productivity solving problems or enhancing products or services. Be as specific as you can using numbers dollars and percentages as accurately as possible. The resume formats are decided as per the kind of job you are looking for your experience and your skill set etc. You may be aware that the employer can not spend much time reading a resume; your resume should be precise. If the employer goes through your resume within 30 seconds he/she decides whether to call you for the interview or not.
