I was delighted to learn about the many resume formats available but first I had to spend some time contemplating which format was best for me. I did not simply pick the format I thought was the prettiest but instead focused on which format would be the most appealing to potential employers. I had to do a great deal of investigating to make this decision. The first step was determining the number of formats available. Then I took a close look at each format and the benefits it offered. I also spent time searching for information on why each format is most useful. In conclusion I decided to test out a few resume formats before making my final decision. I did not take this process lightly and designed entire resumes with a few different formats. After designing these resumes I critiqued them objectively as though I was the potential employer and considered whether or not I would hire someone with this type of resume. The process of selecting a format was certainly not an easy one but in the end I was satisfied with my decision. I knew the format I had chosen would help me to stand out. One of the first things to consider before you decide which resume format you will use is the industry you are hoping to work in. Although no particular format is considered to be right or wrong certain industries have a preference for certain resume formats and care should be taken to cater to these preferences. In this article we will take a look at the chronological format and also the functional format.
When the reader can understand what you are attempting to convey it is easier for them to evaluate your potential ability to do the job. Your resume formats should include a good font. Do not choose something because you think it gives the resume more personality or makes it more personal. Choose something that is easy to read and will not cause eyestrain. You need to have the opportunity to capture the reader with your words. Keep in mind that if you are using boxes lines or shading in your resume formats that they can be very confusing if they are not used properly. The most effective use for these types of graphics is to delineate the sections of your resume such as your experience or your educational background. Keep in mind that your resume formats should always maintain a professional air. Certainly the resume you submit does not have to adhere to resume formats that one would use for an executive position for a Fortune 50 company if you are applying for a position in customer service at a cell phone company but it still must show that you are committed to being professional in your role as an employee of their company.
You should also make sure the content clearly conveys the intended message. Taking these steps is very important because the visual appeal of the format will not overshadow a poorly written resume. Getting too worked up about different types of resume formats is not recommended even through many websites may focus on this. Instead of spending too much time worrying about the format focus on making sure your work experience section is written succinctly yet provides all of the necessary details. Before you begin the process of writing your resume it is important to realize resume formats can be changed. Regardless of the type of format you select you can make changes to make this format more suitable for you. It is even possible to create a resume which incorporates design features of two different formats. It is also important for you to realize you will not land a job on the format of your resume alone. Although it is true that you will not land a job based on your format you should realize your format can cost you a job even when you are the right candidate. However as long as your resume looks decent your work experience will outshine the formatting. Some job seekers take a look at the situation they are currently in to determine which format is best. Job seekers who have held a number of jobs in a short period of time may prefer on a functional format because it focuses on their skills instead of how long they held each position. Job seekers who have advanced in their career may prefer the chronological format because it dictates this progression.
