There are a number of situations in which this resume format works well such as: When youre trying to make a career change. (You can list your relevant skills and experience up front then any relevant education. Next list your job history but only include the relevant duties performed at each. When you have done almost the same duties everywhere youve worked. (Listing the same duties over and over under each employer is redundant. Instead you can highlight your most significant skills and experience up front along with any special awards or achievements. Then list only company-specific duties under each employer. Tips for using this resume format. Take the tips listed above for each of the other formats and incorporate them. Also keep in concise and interesting. Avoid boring job descriptions.
Most employers prefer this type of resume format as they can easily assess your qualifications by reviewing your recent and past employment history and educational background. Putting your most recent employment first can help them gauge your suitability to the role. It is a known fact that most employers would prefer someone who had recent experience with a role than someone who had experience with it five years ago. When using a chronological resume format you should list your most recently held position followed by two to four other positions arranged in reverse order. Also include the months and years you were employed. You dont necessarily have to provide the exact date. Be sure to be able to explain gaps in your employment if there are any as this will be most noticeable in this type of resume format.
The Combination Resume Format The combination resume as its name implies combines the best of both the chronological resume and the functional resume. A functional resume format is followed but the job dates are included. The employer is primarily interested in knowing what value you can bring to the company so that if your first page (or the first 2/3rds) of your resume can effectively show what value you bring to the company then any gaps may be overlooked in favour of bringing you in for an interview. A resume is basically a summary of your past employment history achievements skills educational attainments and competencies acquired through the years. Your resume is your sales letter to a prospective employer to tell them that you are the best candidate for the role.
